A green glimpse of the northwest cornerA few scans from Durness - Daniel and Clare, 1996 |
These are old photos from our midsummer week in Durness in 1996: the photos are pretty rough, scanned from paper copies for the web, and we had really no experience with photography back then, so apologies for all that: the main thing we want to show is the Loch Eriboll wheelhouse, in case you've not come across it.
This is a wild though quite sheltered, spot, about 1,000 feet above the Loch. It's protected from the east side by a small steep rise, and from the southwest by the huge boulderfields of Beinn Spionnaidh northern outliers. From the doorway at the north of the building, you look down a chain of lochans towards the white cliffs and the sea. It feels quite secluded yet the views are inspiring. Some of it still has the large roof-slabs in place, but they only give about four feet of headroom above the current ground level!
